Ruston Revisited

My mother-in-law brought us down to her home town of Ruston, Louisiana for a long weekend to meet her new husband and his family.  We have been in Ruston a lot in the past visiting Jeff's grandmother. Now that his mom is moving there permanently, I'll have more opportunities to visit and to put on my travel blog hat. This trip's Ruston highlights included:

Squire Creek
This is a golf course neighborhood that made me wish briefly that I played golf.  There are also tennis courts (yay!) and other tempting options for visiting in the summer. I'm looking at you, infinity pool.

We ate twice at the country club during this trip, and while I didn't indulge in my favorite beverage, sweet tea, I can attest that the gumbo ya ya and everything on the Sunday brunch menu was delicious (and yes, I did try just about everything).  I would have taken photos of the food, but since I was meeting family for the first time I decided to behave. Until...

Counter Culture's Humphrey
Oh my, I have found a new food obsession. Counter Culture is a colorful restaurant in downtown Ruston.

They are know for the "Humphrey", which is a frozen yogurt dish served with your choice of fruit (I chose banana, strawberry and blueberry), and topped with granola and honey.  After one bite I knew it was flavor nirvana.  Especially since the frozen yogurt is the sweet-n-tangy kind, which I haven't had since the 1980's at my favorite shop Kazoo's in Muncie. I had a Humphrey two days in a row, it is that good.  Highly, highly recommend if you are in the area.

Louisiana Tech basketball game

We also took in a Tech game.  Loved their live bulldog mascot, Champ.  Saw Karl Malone's retired number 32. Also saw a couple of crazy fans at the game - they are intense, they both stand near one another but it doesn't seem that they attend together, and they have their own patterns of hand, leg and body movements depending on what the team is doing.  Fascinating to watch (from a distance).  Tech won!  It was an entertaining game.  In true southern style, we ran the gauntlet of meeting and greeting all the way in and all the way out.

Come to think of it, by the end of the trip each of us ran into someone we knew at either Squire Creek, the restaurants that we went to, or the Tech game. I love southern hospitality and connections!

Heading home

We also stopped briefly on the way back to the airport at Lincoln Parish park.  I so wanted to take a run/walk around the lake, but we were out of time. Next trip.

Because of our flight back, we missed most of the Superbowl, except for the last 5 minutes of the game, which worked out for us the see the most pivotal moments.  Still, we missed the halftime show until we watched it the next night, and I love this so dang much I have to include it here:

And, back to Wisconsin and a snowstorm:
