National Corvette Museum - Bowling Green, Kentucky

The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky is an interesting experience whether you are a sports car fan or not.

This tangible ode to the iconic brand first started out as an idea to create a library with archives of the history of the vehicle.  Along the way, the organizers wisely decided to think bigger by including the actual cars.

When I proposed this tour stop to Jeff, he immediately remembered there had been a giant sinkhole that opened up under the grand showroom and swallowed several cars into the depths, luckily in the middle of the night so no people were hurt.  The museum now has an exhibit devoted to the sinkhole - explaining how social media was used to communicate and explain the events was fascinating.

John zipped through every exhibit in about 5 minutes, so he ended up with lots of down time but seemed fairly (okay, somewhat) interested, for him.  Jeff liked learning about the inner workings and how the cars were constructed.  I appreciated the beauty of the cars, especially the concept designs, as well as the stories behind many of the cars exhibited.  Many of the cars are on loan from their owners and represent several decades, styles and colors.

The final main exhibit is a lineup of the cars that were the most greatly damaged through their trip into the sinkhole, and after all of the loving buildup of the history of the Corvette brand and getting to know more about the cars, seeing them bashed to pieces was unexpectedly jarring and sad to see.

We entered a raffle for this car, although I can't imagine actually driving it if we won it - Corvettes are still a bit too flashy for my personal taste, but it was fun to sit in the driver's seat!
There is also a tour of the Corvette plant, but we saved that for another time, so that we could be on our way to Florida.
