Tour de Arkansas: Day 1

As I mentioned in my first (and only) Family and Friends Friday, I had a road trip planned with a family friend of mine, Terry.  He has traveled all over the world, but I thought he would definitely enjoy what Arkansas had to offer.  Here is an overview of some highlights, which I had meant to recap on a daily basis, but we've been on the move or enjoying time with my parents, so here is a look at what we've been up to so far:

Day 1:  Downtown Fayetteville:

Brunch at Carey Arsaga's Depot location is a perfect way to start the trip. There's a bike trail that runs right along side this renovated building.  We drove up and parked for this trip.  Savory crepes, sweet crepes, and perfect coffee got us of to a good, late-ish start.

The Joe Martin Memorial stage race was underway around the corner. Jeff participated in this race for many years. Terry and I split off from my parents and went up to the University of Arkansas, my alma mater.  The campus looks fantastic.  We got to the music building (where I lived for four years) and saw some students getting ready for a performance, so we ended up enjoying the first half of the student honors recital.  It was strange yet soothing watching these up and coming musicians where I had spent so many days doing the same thing.

Walking around the campus, we spied the new addition to the architecture building (above).  The mashup of the very old Vol Walker hall with this addition was quite striking.  Terry and I had an adventure where once we were in the building, we couldn't get out of any of the exits.

The day was complete after driving up to the top spot in Fayetteville for the view from the top of Mount Sequoyah.  This is not my photo, but you get the idea.

Next up: quirky Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
