Verdi Cries: Lyric Opera of Chicago

The man in 119 takes his tea all alone
Mornings we all rise to wireless Verdi cries
I'm hearing opera through the door
The souls of men and women, impassioned all
Their voices climb and fall, battle trumpets call
I fill the bath and climb inside, singing...

10,000 Maniacs/Verdi Cries

One of my favorite songs that made me always wonder what it would like to experience a Verdi opera.  Well, that is no longer a question, because last weekend I was treated to "Nabucco" at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.  (Side note, I just looked up their web page to add in the link and one of their top choices on their site is Planned Giving.  Impressed, and not surprised).

Although this time it wasn't Aida, and there were no Jackal headed women, (instead, lots of funny red hats on warriors that reminded me of puppy dog ears), we had a great time.  Our friend Terry has 2 of his four seats...in the second row.  It is always an exquisite experience to see any kind of show with him.  Here is the orchestra pit from where we were...the conductor's head was so close if I stretched I could have patted him.  I assure you I did not.

Can I play?

While I don't have a lot of comparisons with other opera companies, the grandeur of the surroundings and the exceptional musicianship are reasons to experience the Lyric at least once. Plus, Chicago is just an awesome city. Now I want to take an architectural tour:

Good people watching from up here.

Ciao!
