Broad Ripple Neighborhood, Indy
Last week's work trip was primarily in Indianapolis. In an unusual turn of events, all five of my appointments were within a 15 minute drive of each other. So excited, because: That. Never. Happens. So, once I knew where all I was going, I set out to book my hotel.
I found an anomaly with my search - a small boutique-style hotel smack dab in the middle of all my appointments. How convenient! And the price was in line with a typical hotel room. I entered in my date (one night), and my plans were dashed as I saw the price change for that one (Tuesday?!!) night to almost double the price.
Dejected, I moved on to do the prudent thing and book at one of the interstate hotels not too far away. And then I saw the results: Sold Out/Sold Out/Sold Out. The closest open hotel was Downtown, for $1 less per night than the one room left at the perfectly-located lodging option. So I quickly jumped onto Expedia and booked my original, convenient room straight away.
And what a lovely, comfortable place it turned out to be. The Hotel Broad Ripple was located right on the Monon Trail, so after a day's worth of flying to Indy and several meetings, I ended my evening with a stroll on the trail (too tired for a jog), and then walked to a restaurant located right on the trail. Everything I needed was right there, and no need to drive anywhere.
I loved the living room of the hotel, where you could have family and friends visit over a glass of wine. The decor reminded me of what I see on HGTV's "Fixer Upper" - comfortable yet elegant. I am pretty sure the wall on my bed was covered in shiplap, for those of you who are fans of the series.
In the morning, I went across the street to a little house turned into a cafe, and had a homemade muffin and some of the best coffee I have enjoyed in a long time. There was a big table with some older adult couples gossiping about weddings - great eavesdropping, plus a couple of young businessmen in suits, and me in my workout gear and tennies.
Returning to the room to check out, I lingered on the porch balcony for a while:
Other elements of the area that I loved were:
- The sculpture garden that I found walking along the trail, as part of the Indianapolis Arts Center grounds:
Crossing the White River, exploring a side trail...
Wonderfully, there were multiple restaurants all lining the trail. I had heard about the Public Greens restaurant but didn't find it until the morning (it was the other way down the trail), and once I saw the outdoor fire pit and modern decor I knew I had to come back to try it.
A great find in a neat area that I barely scratched the surface. I enjoyed the mix of urban/nature; highbrow + rustic; apartments/houses/condos/businesses; and with a cross-fit gym in what looked like a renovated warehouse right next door to the hotel, I guess it makes it super hip. Looking forward to coming back to Broad Ripple!
